چکیده

We investigate stability of Toomre-Hayashi model for a self-gravitating, rotating gas disk. The rotation velocity, vφ, and sound speed, cs, are spatially constant in the model. We show that the model is unstable against an axisymmetric perturbation irrespectively of the values of vφ and cs. When the ratio, vφ/cs, is large, the model disk is geometrically thin and unstable against an axisymmetric perturbation having a short radial wavelength, i.e., unstable against fragmentation. When vφ/cs is smaller than 1.20, it is unstable against total collapse. Toomre-Hayashi model of 1.7 . vφ/cs . 3 was thought to be stable against axisymmetric perturbations in earlier studies in which only radial motion was taken into account. Thus, the instability of Toomre-Hayashi model having a medium vφ/cs is due to not change in the surface density but that in the disk height. We also find that the singular isothermal perturbation is stable against non-spherical peturbations.

Numerical requirements for simulations of self gravitating and non-self gravitating disks

We define three requirements for accurate simulations that attempt to model circumstellar disks and the formation of collapsed objects (e.g. planets) within them. First, we define a resolution requirement based on the wavelength for neutral stability of self gravitating waves in the disk, where a Jeans analysis does not apply. For particle based or grid based simulations, this criterion takes t...

Implications of modes of star formation for the overall dynamics of galactic disks

One of the present concepts for the onset of massive star formation is the Kennicutt criterion. This relates the onset of massive star formation to a general gravitational instability of the gas disks of spiral galaxies. It is often overlooked, however that such gravitational instabilities of the gas disks have severe implications for the overall stability of the gas and star disks of spiral ga...

The Amount of Dark Matter in Spiral Galaxies

The ‘maximum’ disk hypothesis of galactic disks imbedded in dark matter halos is examined. First, decompositions of the rotation curves of NGC2613, 3198, 6503, and 7184 are analyzed. For these galaxies the radial velocity dispersions of the stars have been measured. If the parameters of the decompositions are chosen according to the ‘maximum’ disk hypothesis, the Toomre Q stability parameter is...

Jeans instability of a galactic disk embedded in a live dark halo ( Research Note )

We investigate the Jeans instability of a galactic disk embedded in a dynamically responsive dark halo. It is shown that the disk-halo system becomes nominally Jeans unstable. On small scales the instability is suppressed, if the Toomre stability index Q T is higher than a certain threshold, but on large scales the Jeans instability sets invariably in. However, using a simple self-consistent di...

The Star Formation Rate in disk galaxies: thresholds and dependence on gas amount

We reassess the applicability of the Toomre criterion in galactic disks and we study the local star formation law in 16 disk galaxies for which abundance gradients are published. The data we use consists of stellar light profiles, atomic and molecular gas (deduced from CO with a metallicity-dependent conversion factor), star formation rates (from Hα emissivities), metallicities, dispersion velo...
